Eat Well With Implant-Supported Dentures

  • September 1, 2016

Imagine two long-time friends getting together for lunch.

One of the friends scans the menu. He’d really like to try the chicken with cooked carrots, but he is worried that his dentures will fall out if he tries to eat this meal.

He settles on a bowl of soup and a side salad. It’s something he knows he can eat without too much difficulty.

His friend doesn’t hesitate. He wants a steak, medium rare, with corn on the cob on the side. This is the first time they’ve eaten here, and he judges every restaurant by their steak.

The second man also has dentures. The difference is that he has implant-supported dentures, like the kind you could get at Historic Triangle Dental Care.

Our dentist has helped many people in and around Williamsburg, VA, receive comfortable, secure digital dentures at our office. We’ll tell you more about how the ways dental implants can improve your implant experience.

Dentures Start OK

A good set of dentures should feel comfortable and should be custom-fitted to your mouth.

Inevitably, you will need a little time to adjust to having and using your dentures. As you become familiar with what they can do, you will understand what foods you can eat and which foods you should avoid.

It’s better than having no teeth at all, right?

One of the issues with traditional dentures is they are made to fit your mouth. When you don’t have teeth, you don’t have roots. Without roots, your jaw can start to lose bone density, and this can change the shape of your mouth.

As a result, your dentures can become looser and less comfortable. This can lead to more frequent slippages when you are talking and more difficulty when trying to eat.

You can address both the changing shape of your mouth and the security and stability of your dentures with a single solution — dental implants.

The Benefits Of Working Together

Dentures are meant to be teeth replacements but by themselves, they really only replaced the crowns of your teeth. Those are the parts of your teeth that visible.

Dental implants replace the roots of your teeth in multiple ways. First, implants are placed directly into your jawbone, which encourages the new tissue growth that keeps your jaw healthy and greatly reduces your risk of bone loss.

The new tissue also bonds to your implants to hold them securely in place. When you have series of implants, they provide a stable foundation for your dentures.

Implant-supported dentures will restore nearly all of your original biting power, which means you can eat the foods that you want to eat instead of the foods you feel like you have to eat.

Know Your Options

Dental implants were developing in the 1960s. Today, they are used by dentists around the world to give their patients the best teeth replacements possible.

Today’s patients also benefit from decades of research and development that have given us better implants and better techniques for placing those implants.

Here are some of the options available at Historic Triangle Dental Care:

✦ All-on-4® — This is one of the ways that technique has made implant placement more efficient and more effective. With All-on-4 implants, we place (you guessed it) four implants in your jaw.

The technology we have incorporated into our practice helps us plan the best possible placements for your implants so you get the maximum benefit from each.

✦ All-on-6® — This procedure is quite similar to the All-on-4 with two additional implants. The extra implants will give added confidence to patients who want additional security. This also may be preferable to All-on-4 depending on the condition of your mouth and jaw.

✦ Mini Implants — Earlier, we mentioned how jawbones lose density when you don’t have roots or something to replace those roots. If you wait to get implants, you may not have enough bone mass left to support standard implants.

Mini implants have a smaller diameter than those implants. As a result, these can provide comparable benefits for patients who are not able to receive standard implants.

✦ Same-Day Smile – In many cases, you will need time to heal after your implants are placed before you dentures can be attached. This can mean months of walking around without “teeth.”

With Same-Day Smile, we can place a set of temporary dentures on your implants on the same day you receive them. This way your smile can look complete while your mouth heals. When you have recovered from the placement procedure, you will return to our office so we can attach your permanent dentures.
