Family Dentistry Begins At Home
Welcome to the oral health blog of Historic Triangle Dental Care!
Our dynamic office strives to offer comprehensive and convenient dental services to the good folks of Williamsburg, Virginia.
Regardless of your age or background, we’ve got you covered for cosmetic dentistry, implants, sleep apnea solutions, TMJ treatment, and more.
We are also big on family dentistry and all the preventative practices that go along with it. In fact, we like to start seeing children before their second birthday.
There are good reasons for this.
Bringing your kids in for checkups at an early age will allow us to look around for anything out of the ordinary, and will also allow your child to become acquainted with our team.
What’s more, we can use these opportunities to make sure that proper hygiene habits are in place.
These habits definitely begin at home, though, obviously, they don’t end there.
Begin Brushing Before They Get Teeth
Children should be taught to brush even before they get teeth.
This is because, by the time they actually have teeth, there is already dangerous bacteria that could cause unwanted trouble in your child’s mouth.
The American Dental Association would like to see everyone in your family brushing twice a day for at least 120 seconds per session.
And we’d like to see that too!
Brushing Is Only Your First Line Of Defense
We hope you already realize that brushing really is the least you can do to fight off bacteria, cavities, and disease.
Did you also know that the only way to effectively remove food, tartar and plaque from between your teeth, and other hard to reach areas is by flossing?
For some reason, we tend to get a lot of push back when we bring up dental floss.
Yes, flossing can hurt sometimes.
But it doesn’t hurt as much as gum disease or losing teeth, and it only adds an extra minute to your daily routine.
For optimal oral health, your entire family should be flossing every day.
You can even go the extra mile and start rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash, your smile will thank you later.
The Dentist Is Your Friend
We always tell people that finding a dentist you can trust ranks up there with finding a good family physician as one of the best things you can do for your continued well being.
However, for us to do you any good, you have to be diligent about keeping regular appointments for your family.
We recommend that patients visit our office for preventative measures every six months or so depending on your situation.
This will allow us to build better personal relationships with each member of your family and stay on top of any developing issues.
At Historic Triangle Dental Care, our office visits are actually broken down into two components.
During the first part of your visit, a hygienist will perform some initial examinations to look for periodontal disease and to make sure everything else looks the way it should.
At this time, we will also take X-rays and digital photographs of your mouth, and begin the cleaning process.
Professional cleanings are essential because they take care of any residual tartar, plaque, and bacteria that builds up over time in your mouth.
In the second phase of your visit, the doctor will check your soft and hard tissue, airways, and bite to make sure you are in good shape.
We will also perform an oral cancer screening before you leave.
Trust us, it is always better to know early on if there are problems than to wait until they become painful and expensive to treat.
Regular visits to the dentist, along with good habits at home, will keep you smiling for years to come.
