Get Ready For School With Healthy Smiles

  • August 8, 2016

Think ahead to a few weeks from now …

You fixed a quick breakfast. Your children are dressed and ready to go. Their backpacks are full of supplies they will need for the upcoming school year.

As you see them off to the bus stop or you drop them off at school, you may wonder if you forgot anything.

You remembered the paper, the pens and pencils, and the notebooks. You got new outfits, which hopefully will last the whole year. Is there anything else?

Did you remember to bring your kids to Historic Triangle Dental Care for a cleaning and examination?

Back to the present day, you’ve still got time to schedule a cleaning at our dentist office in Williamsburg, VA, before homework, practices, games, and other activities take over what was your family’s free time.

Comprehensive Dental Care

We take pride in being able to offer a wide array of dental services in our practice. We want to make dental care as easy as we can for you and your family. We know that you are busy. We know that your time is valuable.

And we also know that you don’t want to spend more time at the dentist office than necessary.

One of the ways that you can do that is by scheduling routine cleanings and examinations for your family. Why not do that before schoolwork and related activities take over your lives again?

If you come to our office, you can count on a complete cleaning from our hygienist. She will remove any plaque and tartar that your children may have missed despite their assurances that they did brush their teeth like you asked.

We also will be alert for any signs or symptoms of gum disease or tooth decay. Did you know that more than half of children between the ages of 5 and 9 will have at least one cavity?

A preventive cleaning could avoid that. An examination could identify that problem before it becomes worse and the treatment becomes more expensive.

Remember To Do Your Homework

As important as your routine examinations are, your family also needs to do their homework.

This means brushing and flossing your teeth every single day, but it also means making sure you are brushing and flossing correctly. When you ask, “Did you brush your teeth?” make sure you and your children are thinking about the question in the same way.

According to the American Dental Association, everyone should brush their teeth for two minutes at a time. For children old enough to brush on their own and for adults, all you need is a pea-sized amount of a toothpaste with fluoride.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub your teeth on all sides. Remember to brush twice per day, and remember to replace your toothbrushes every three or four months.

It’s equally important that you and your children floss every day. Flossing is how you remove bacteria and plaque from the spaces that your toothbrush can’t clean.

If you think about it this way, your dental exam is like a regular test to make sure you are doing what you should.

Earn Some Extra Credit

We know that you love your kids, and you want them to be as healthy as they can be. That certainly includes their oral health.

But you also realize your kids aren’t perfect. Sometimes, they are going to eat too many sweets, and other times they aren’t going to brush their teeth as well as you would like.

Dental sealants can help.

Sealants are a barrier that can be applied to your kids’ teeth. This barrier provides an added level of protection against the bacteria that cause tooth decay for the teeth that are most likely to develop cavities.

Another way to help your children and yourself is through fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a mineral that can repair minor problems with the enamel of your teeth, and it can strengthen the enamel as well.

If you have any athletes in your family, you know there are risks that come with playing sports. An accident or injury could happen during a game or a practice.

A custom-fitted mouthguard is the most comfortable and the most effective way to protect against serious injuries to your kids’ teeth and jaws.

Let us know if you are interested in having us make a mouthguard for any member of your family.
