You try to take a bite of an apple, but it’s not going to happen. Your dentures just don’t give you enough “umph” (to use the technical term) to get what you want.
You can cut it up into smaller pieces, but even then you’ve noticed that it takes more effort to chew each bite of the apple.
Sure, you are getting food, but eating a snack shouldn’t require a lot of effort on your part. Besides, part of the enjoyment of eating a fresh, crisp apple is the sound of the crunch with you bite into it.
If you are tired of fighting with your dentures every time you want to eat, then you may be ready to learn about implant-supported dentures. You can learn more about them by scheduling a consultation at Historic Triangle Dental Care if you live in or near Williamsburg, VA.
What Are Dental Implants?
You may be familiar with prosthetics. You may even know someone with a prosthetic foot or leg. Well, dental implants are a prosthetic replacement for the roots of your missing teeth.
Roots do a couple things that help our teeth. First, they serve as anchors. The roots of your teeth are embedded in your jawbone. This helps you generate the force that you do when you are biting into and chewing your food.
A person with a set of healthy teeth can generate between 200 and 250 pounds of force. Studies have found that people with dentures can generate up to 50 pounds of force. This might explain why biting into that fresh apple is so tough.
The other things roots do is stimulate your jawbone to grow new tissue. The pressure created by your bite pushes into the bone, and that leads to new tissue creation. That keeps the bone healthy and strong, too.
Dental implants fill in the space created by your missing teeth. They too press into your jaw to encourage new bone growth. As this happens, your bone will bond to the implants to hold them securely in place.
This is also why a series of dental implants can be used to support a set of dentures. The end result is a big improvement over dentures alone.
You may not regain all of your original bite force, but you will be close enough that eating an apple or taking a bite of corn on the cob shouldn’t be a problem.
What Are All-on-4® Implants?
In a way, All-on-4® dental implants are as much a technique as a product.
It’s certainly possible to place several dental implants throughout your jaw to secure your dentures where you want them to stay (in your mouth).
For many patients, All-on-4 is a more efficient and less expensive way to achieve comparable results. This works because of the strategic approach to implant placement that allows you to get the maximum benefit from each one.
With All-on-4, two dental implants are placed vertically at the front of your mouth. The other two implants are placed at an angle closer to the back of your mouth.
For patients who may have lost bone density after years of wearing traditional dentures, this technique may allow you to get implant-supported dentures without needing any kind of bone augmentation.
Other Benefits Of All-on-4
Using four strategically placed dental implants has other benefits as well.
By using fewer implants, you will need less time to heal after your placement procedure. In fact, we may be able to place a temporary set of dentures on the same day as this procedure.
As we have alluded to already, using fewer implants also reduces the cost of getting implant-supported dentures.
It’s worth pointing out that studies have found both high rates of success and satisfaction among patients who have undergone the All-on-4 procedure.
We also know that some patients still may have concerns about whether four implants will be enough to provide the strength and stability they want for their dentures. If you are one of them, then you may want to consider the All-on-6 procedure instead.
You want your smile to look nice, and traditional dentures will accomplish that. However, our teeth also serve an important function, and implant-supported dentures allow you to regain nearly all of the original function of your teeth.
The All-on-4 procedure we offer at Historic Triangle Dental Care is an effective and efficient way to get the results that you want.
